Jean Armand de Maillé-Brézé, Duke of Fronsac, Marquis de Brézé He was born into one of the moJst powerful families in France at the time. His father was Urbain de Maillé, Marquis de Brézé, Marshal of France, his uncle Cardinal Richelieu, King Louis XIII. First Minister, and his brother-in-law Louis II de Bourbon, prince de Condé (better known as le Grand Condé), was the First Prince by Blood. The family's ancestral home was Brézé Castle. It was thanks to his uncle that he received the title of Grand-maître de la navigation (Grand Master of the Navy) at the age of 17, a title given by King Louis XIII. new title created for Cardinal Richelieu, which was equivalent to Admiral of France. He was one of the influential figures in the Eighty Years' War, defeated the Spanish fleet in the Battle of Cádiz on July 20, 1640 and then took Villafranca. In 1641 he was sent to Portugal to support the Portuguese in the Restoration War against Spain. In 1642 he repelled Spanish forces near Barcelona and almost completely destroyed a Spanish fleet near Cartagena on July 3, 1643. On June 14, 1646, he was killed by a cannonball at the Battle of Orbetello; France lost the battle against the Spanish fleet. His remains were buried in the chapel of Milly-le-Meugon, near the castle walls.
