MF VÆRØY is a gas-fuelled ferry, built in 2012 for the Torghatten Nord shipping company. It serves the route Bodø-Røst- Værøy-Moskenes across Vestfjord and can carry 390 passengers and 120 cars. It is one of the four ferries serving the Lofoten islands. The ferry route from Bodø to Røst, Værøy and Moskenes is not only the longest in Norway but also the most exposed.

M/F "VÆRØY" was delivered from Gdansk Shiprepair Yard "Remontowa" SA as the second gas ferry to Torghatten Nord AS, Tromsø on 15 October 2012. The ferry has the yard's construction number 612/2. First out was LANDEGODE, which was mentioned in SKIPSREVYEN no. 5/2012, and now the last two remaining in the 4-ship order. LMG Marin AS has been responsible for concept development, design and engineering of the vessel class.
"VÆRØY" was christened on 26 October by the county council in Nordland, Tove Mette Bjørkmo. The contract between the shipping company and the Norwegian Road Administration was stated to be worth almost NOK 1.4 billion. The contract has a duration of 10 years from 2013 and requires four gas ferries and two ordinary diesel ferries, as well as a spare ferry.

Together with the aforementioned LANDEGODE, the ferry will operate the connection at the far end of the Vestfjord from Bodø to Moskenes, Værøy and Røst. NOx emissions are reduced by 90% and CO2 emissions by 25% (or 40% according to the manufacturer) with gas operation compared to conventional diesel propulsion.
The ferry is equipped with side stabilizers which lead to less heeling in high seas. In the lounge, 60% of the seating is equipped with comfortable armchairs. The passenger capacity is 390. Capacity for passenger cars is approx. 120, or 12 trailers and 80 pbe. This means an increase of 30% from the current situation.

Machinery
These Torghatten Nord vessels are the first to use Rolls-Royce's Hybrid Shaft Generator (HSG). HSG is an advanced electrical system that allows for more flexible use of engine and propeller speed, so that the effect is maximized and fuel, CO2 and NOx emissions are reduced. Gas engine and integrated rudder and propeller system (Promas) collectively lead to a reduction in CO2 emissions of approx. 40% compared to conventional vessels. The delivery includes a main switchboard and an integrated automation and control system, developed especially for LNG-powered ships. Eltek has supplied UPS.
The engine is of the RR Bergen B35:40 V12PG type, which has an output of 5250 kW at 750 rpm and a propeller system of the Kamewa type. Steering machinery is type Tenfjord and remote control type Helicon X3. Vulkan Rato has supplied gas machinery couplings. The LNG tank is supplied by Hamworthy and is 150 m3.
The ferry is equipped with three RRM TT1300 side thrusters. The power supply is provided by an MTU 16V4000M43S motor of 2240 ekW v/1800 rpm. The emergency generator is a Nordhavn make type GACE8-06E.
The pump deliveries are from Grundfoss and Allweiler, and both Alfa Laval and RWO have supplemented separators. Compressors come from Sauer & Sohn, while Ulmatec Pyro has been responsible for the boiler equipment on board. For firefighting, Autronica has supplied a water mist system and a foam system.

Clear height on the upper car deck is 4.5 meters and on the deck below 2.5 meters. The stern ramp has a width of 11.5 metres, while the bow ramp measures 5.5 metres. MacGregor has had deliveries such as hatches, bow door w/ramp, stern gate and stern ramp. NDM has supplied deck machinery, and waterproof sliding doors are from IMS. Tranberg has been responsible for floodlights, while floodlights are from MariTeam.
Brude Safety has delivered a MES Chute SRL with an evacuation height of 4-25 metres. MOB boat, FRB 650, w/davit ice Noreq deliveries.
Galley equipment is made by Beha, and the toilet system is from Evac. Alu Design has delivered the wheelhouse chairs. The navigation equipment is a delivery from ELSE Tech&Research Service, and KCC Spotka has taken care of the communication equipment on board. Elecom has delivered the CCTV system.
