HMS Montagu- British ship of the line (1779)

HMS Montague was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched on 28 August 1779 at Chatham Dockyard. The second ship of the Royal Navy, named after the Dukes of Montagu. Participated in the American War of Independence. Was at Cape Finisterre and in the Battle of Moonlight, at Martinique, at Fort Royal, at Chesapeake, at All Saints Islands, in the Mona Strait. Montague took part in the Battle of Cape St Vincent in 1780 and the Glorious First of June in 1794. Participated in the French Revolutionary War. Was at the First of June (Battle between Great Britain and France on June 1, 1794).
On 30 October 1794 Montague and Ganges captured the French corvette Jacobine. Jacobine was armed with twenty-four 12-pounder guns, and had a crew of 220 men; she was nine days out of Brest and had taken nothing. The Royal Navy took Jacobine into service as HMS Matilda.
1797 - Captain John Knight, North Sea squadron. He took part in the Battle of Camperdown (battle between the English and Dutch fleets) in the North Sea, on October 11, 1897.
1799 - in the blockade squadron near Cadiz.
1800 - Captain Knight, senior officer of the coastal squadron near Brest, on Montagu forced the French frigates into action in Berthum Bay on April 12, but they were too well protected by numerous batteries.
Montague was driven ashore and damaged at Saint Lucia in the Great Hurricane of 1780 but recovered.
Captain Peter Heywood, 1772-1831 was appointed her commander in 1813.
In 1813 Captain Peter Heywood was appointed to command the Montagu in the North Sea and afterwards in the Mediterranean under Lord Exmouth, until July 1816. This was Heywood's last service.
Montague was broken up in 1818.
