100th Anniversary of the Institute of Oceanography in Paris

For the 100th Anniversary of the Institute of Oceanography in Paris, Monaco issued in 2011 one stamp of 0.77 Euro to remember this. The Institute of Oceanography was founded in 1910 in the fifth arrondissement of Paris by Prince Albert of Monaco and inaugurated on 23rd January 1911. With Monaco’s Oceanographic Museum, it forms part of the Prince Albert I of Monaco foundation, whose aim is to spread knowledge about the ocean. Today, this Parisian establishment is continuing its mission of university teaching and educating the general public.

(The stamp shows us some fish, the building in Paris and a sailing vessel in the background of the stamp, most probably she is the research yacht PRINCESSE ALICE I built in 1891, she was the only yacht of Prince Albert I with three masts. Comparing the ship on the stamp which is very small with photo’s of the yacht the outline and rigging looks similar. He was no longer the owner of the yacht when the Institute of Oceanography was founded.)
