The first self-righting lifeboat from the INSULINDE class became available in 1927. The boat is now located at the Dorus Rijkers Rescue Museum in Den Helder.

The INSULINDE was a Dutch motor lifeboat of the North and South Holland Rescue Society (NZHRM), which served at the rescue station in Oostmahorn between 1927 and 1965. For the development and construction, 50,000 guilders were raised by the inhabitants of the Dutch East Indies, which was also called " INSULINDE ", hence the name.
The INSULINDE was the world's first large self-righting steel motor lifeboat . If the ship capsizes, it turns itself upright again by means of a tilting tank and the weighted keel . It has two separate engine compartments and can be steered from the inside.
The idea for this type of boat probably originated from the experiment - in 1907 - of an unsinkable lifeboat invented by Jacob Pieter Schuttevaer (Zwolle 1858 - Rotterdam 1938).
The ship was built in the period 1926-1927 by the Gebroeders Niestern shipyard in Delfzijl , to a design by Ernst Vossnack . However, the invention was made by Jan Niestern, who had gotten the idea from Mees Toxopeus , who mentioned it in a letter to the NZHRM in 1921 as one of the ideas for a safer type of lifeboat . In 1921, the Terschellinger motor lifeboat BRANDARIS and the steam lifeboat PRESIDENT VAN HEEL had sunk and capsized respectively. Ten rescuers had drowned. These events were the reason for looking for ways to make rescues at sea safer.
Toxopeus became the first skipper of the INSULINDE in 1927. The remaining crew initially consisted of three residents of Anjum , who were soon replaced. The helmsman was Jaap van der Meulen , who would later become skipper of the sister ship NEELTJE JACOBA . The INSULINDE made 341 trips and saved 332 people. Skipper Toxopeus rescued twelve passengers from the steamship BRAMOW in 1935 with the INSULINDE . He received an award for this. In 1950 he was succeeded as skipper by his brother Klaas Toxopeus . In 1965 the INSULINDE was replaced by the GEBROEDERS LUDEN.
The INSULINDE came into the possession of the Maritime Museum in 1969. The boat was taken over by the National Lifeguard Museum Dorus Rijkers in 2005 and is located in the museum harbour Willemsoord in Den Helder . The restoration began in 2006 and after 6500 man-hours of volunteers the restoration was completed in September 2010. The boat has the status of a sailing monument and is the flagship of the Lifeguard Museum .
