CTT – Correios de Portugal launches this Thursday, July 11th,2024 a philatelic issue dedicated to Mediterranean sports , with distinction for two disciplines: Surfing and Sailing Class 470.
The collection consists of two stamps with face values ​​of €0.90 and €1.30 with a circulation of 70 thousand copies each. The design was by Luís Talim.
First-day cancellations can be made at the CTT Stores in Restauradores and Chiado, in Lisbon, Palácio dos Correios, in Porto, Zarco, in Funchal and Antero de Quental, in Ponta Delgada.

As can be read in an excerpt from the cover of this issue , written by Francisco Pedro Lyon de Castro, “surfing is practiced all over the Mediterranean, from Lebanon to the south of Spain and, of course, on the coasts of Portugal, to the west and south, which, although Atlantic, are strongly influenced by the Mediterranean, which means there are good waves and good weather practically all year round (…) In Portugal, surfing is widespread, both among practitioners of the sport who do it for pure pleasure, and among those who dedicate their professional lives to it in various events on national and international circuits in Portuguese spots (…)

In the case of Class 470 Sailing, this is an Olympic sport that owes its name to the length of the boat, which is 470 cm, and which is contested in women's and men's events. It has been an official sailing competition vessel since 1969 and became an Olympic class at the Montreal Games in 1976. The 470 Class is a class designed for two crew members and is as fast as it is sensitive to the sailors' body movements.
