VENDEE GLOBE RACE

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Jan 06, 2025 10:13 pm

On the occasion of the autumn philatelic fair which will take place from November 7 to 9, 2024, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) will issue a special stamp as part of its partnership with the Vendée Globe, which is celebrating its 10th edition, as well as a series of small value stamps bearing the image of the TAAF anchor, to announce the 70th anniversary of the administration which will be celebrated in 2025.

(The stamp shows a stylized sailyacht in the waters off TAAF.)

Kerguelen : the Vendée Globe ice gateway

Committed to values shared by the Vendée Globe, particularly in terms of protecting marine environments and maritime solidarity, the French Southern and Antarctic Lands are enthusiastically joining forces with the Vendée Globe 2024!
More than 250 years after the discovery of the Crozet and Kerguelen archipelagos by the navigators Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne and Yves-Joseph Kerguelen de Trémarec, the southern seas, located between the Roaring Forties and the Furious Fifties, remain an exceptional and demanding space for exploration and navigation for sailors.
The passage of the Vendée Globe racers off these districts of the French Southern and Antarctic Lands (TAAF) thus constitutes a major stage of their journey, known as the “ice gate”.
A perilous stage for the skippers, the logistical resources deployed by the TAAF in these territories have made it possible to provide assistance to the participants in the race. Indeed, the Marion Dufresne has been mobilized twice for rescue operations for Vendée Globe skippers. In 2008, Bernard Stamm was forced to abandon the race after running aground in the Gulf of Morbihan at Kerguelen following damage. He will be repatriated to Reunion Island by the Marion Dufresne . In 2016, the Marion Dufresne was again mobilized to provide assistance to Kito de Pavant, who suffered major damage to her keel after hitting an unidentified object north of the Crozet archipelago.
It is therefore a shared story that has been written for several decades between the TAAF and the Vendée Globe and which is made official this year thanks to a partnership around the theme of "Ocean".
Who better than the artist Elliot Badique aka Captain Atlas could have created a stamp to illustrate this unique partnership?  An illustrator based in Nantes, in love with the maritime world, his creations are inspired by memories and navigations between the Indian Ocean and the French Atlantic coast.

The artist Eliott BADIQUE will be present on the morning of November 7 at the TAAF stand at the autumn philatelic fair (Porte de Champerret) for a signing session.
