Discovered on January 24, 1772 by the French expedition of Marc Joseph Marion Dufresne, who gave it the name Aride Island, the Île de l'Est was frequented from the beginning of the 19th century by seal hunters mainly from Great Britain and New England.
The best known is Guillaume Lesquin, originally from Roscoff who, at the age of 22, was shipwrecked on July 29, 1825 aboard the AVENTURE with a crew reduced to 6 other people.
He was saved on January 6, 1827 by the British ship CAPE PACKET .
Facing the Île de La Possession, which houses the Alfred Faure base, the Île de l'Est has been classified since 2006 as a fully protected area of the Terres Australes national nature reserve.

On July 29, 1825, the schooner l' AVENTURE, commanded by Guillaume Lesquin, was shipwrecked on the Île de l'Est. After 17 months of survival, the crew was freed when the English whaler CAPE PCKET  passed by .

Guillaume Michel Marie Lesquin ( Roscoff ,May 3, 1803- Valparaiso , Chile ,December 24, 1830) is a French navigator, famous for his shipwreck in the Crozet Islands . He was the son of a merchant from Roscoff , who was mayor of the town . Wanting adventure, he embarked as a novice at the age of 17 on board a ship . Showing his skills very quickly, he rose through the ranks and was given command of the schooner AVENTURE for hunting elephant seals and sea lions in the far south . He left the Isle of France (now Mauritius) on May 28, 1825with the mission of landing part of his crew on the Crozet Islands to hunt these marine mammals and collect their oil. After weeks of difficult navigation, the ship was in sight of Pig Island , but the heavy seas for 20 days prevented any landing . As fresh water began to run out, on July 25, nine men set off in a canoe and managed to reach the island . But a storm arrived and the ship and waves of water broke over the ship, causing a leak and carrying away the second canoe . The anchors broke and the ship was forced to leave on the morning of July 26, leaving the 9 men ashore . Three days later, t July 30. In the storm, the ship hits the reefs of the Île de l'Est . Lesquin and six of his men manage to gain a foothold on the island. The islands of the archipelago are desolate with scant vegetation and the weather at this latitude, very hostile. To survive, the men feed on the eggs of penguins and seabirds and build a rudimentary shelter. With the fat of the elephant seals, they make fuel and dress themselves in the skins of the seals . Exploring the central mountains, they discover the Valley of Abondance to the south of the East Island and, after eighteen months of struggle, the January 6, 1827, are picked up, along with the men from Possession Island, by an English ship which, unaware of the existence of the Crozet Islands, passes by chance. On his return to France, Lesquin wrote his adventures which he published in the Lycée armoricain and in the Annales maritimes et coloniales of 1827 and which were reprinted in 1839-1840 in the Musée des familles . Having set sail again, Guillaume Lesquin was assassinated in Valparaiso onDecember 24, 1830 during a stopover .

The Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Navy holds a handwritten map drawn up by Lesquin of the Eastern and Possession Islands.
Mount Lesquin , the summit of the East Island, which has the highest cliff in the world, is named after him.
