The energy-efficient car carrier "CITY OF ST. PETERSBURG" (9,514 tons) arrived at Yokohama Port for the first time on the 25th March 2011. The new ship, which has a hemispherical bow, can reduce wind resistance by up to 50%. Nissan Motor Co. unveiled it to the press ahead of its introduction in Europe.
The ship docked at Nissan's Honmoku Pier in Yokohama's Naka Ward that morning, loaded with 920 vehicles, including the electric Leaf, and headed for the UK in the evening.
The vessel, which Nissan Special Car Carrier will operate within Europe, can carry 2,000 passenger cars. It is approximately 140 meters long, 22.4 meters wide, and has a total weight of 21,143 tons. Conventional car carriers are box-shaped and susceptible to wind resistance, but by making the bow hemispherical, it is said that fuel consumption can be reduced by up to approximately 800 tons per year, and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions can be reduced by approximately 2,500 tons per year.
The ship was designed and built by Kyokuyo Shipbuilding (Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture). The sister ship, the CITY OF ROTTERDAM, is scheduled to be delivered to Nissan Cargo on March 29th next year.
