OF THE NAVAL FORCE UNDER THE COMMAND OF JERÔNIMO DE ALBUQUERQUE
The effort expended by the inhabitants of Brazil in protecting their homes and, consequently, in maintaining the integrity of the territory, long precedes the sedimentation of nationality after Independence. During the Colonial Period, when fragments of the Portuguese State were established here under the command of the Governors-General and Viceroys, the human element to oppose the invasion attempts of other European powers was recruited from among the inhabitants of the land, simple and pioneering people, many born in Portuguese America, who took up arms to defend the Crown, but, above all, their families and their way of life.
In the second major French attempt to subtract part of the Portuguese Colony for its own use, the occupation of Maranhão between 1612 and 1615 – the short-lived establishment of “Equinoctial France” –, a native of Brazil, mixed-race like many of those who lived along the coast, played a fundamental role in expelling the invader.
400 years ago, Jerônimo de Albuquerque was the first Brazilian to assume command of a naval force used in military operations, a flotilla made up of sailing vessels called caravelões. It was this naval force that, by direct orders of King Philip III, left Recife in June 1613, taking approximately one hundred men, to carry out the first attacks on the French strongholds established along the coast of Maranhão.
However, the invader had built a solid fortification on the Island of São Luís, well-guarded by troops, which prolonged military operations until November 1615. During all this time, Jerônimo de Albuquerque was always on the battle line, leading large groups of archery-wielding Indians or leading columns marching through the backlands, harassing forts or commanding caravels. His participation was so intense that he earned the king the title of Captain-Major of the Conquest of Maranhão and was recognized until his death in 1618 by the name Jerônimo de Albuquerque Maranhão.
