Galiot (galliot);, was a coastal vessel used from the 17th to the 19th century in the merchant navy of the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia, England and France. It was a round-built ship that shows some affinity with the kof and is often confused with it,
Small galliots were rigged with a standing gaff rig and carried leeboards; larger ones carried a one-and-a-half mast rig and had no leeboards. In the course of the 19th century they were also rigged as a topsail schooner, brigatine or brig.
Galiots were also used as an advisory yacht, ferry ship and for fishing.
The hull had a fairly strong sheer and a swept stern. (The hull of the ship is called swept if the stern is sharply cut or shaped with straight waterlines.)
Fast types were referred to as a hardrunner galliot.
The length was about 30m., the carrying capacity was between 160 and 500 tons.

In Germany after 1945 there was still a galliot type equipped with an engine in service, which still carried rigging and leeboards.
Tonnage 195 tons, length 93 feet, width 22 feet, depth 7 feet 8 inches.
