MAUNAWILI built in 1921

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Apr 14, 2025 10:03 pm

The Philippines issued two stamps and a miniature sheet for the 100 years “the Filipino legacy in Hawaii”. In 2006
In the border of the MS is a photo of a ship which transported in 1946 the last Filipino immigrants from the Philippines to Hawaii. They were transported on board the MAUNAWILI a former troopship.

(To find a photo of the MAUNAWILI was not so easy it took me a few hours searching the internet.)

Built as a cargo passenger ship under yard 379 by Merchant Shipbuilding in Chester, Pa. For the Shawmut SS Co. Inc. (America Line) in New York.
10 January 1921 launched as the MOUNT CAROLL one sister the MOUNT CLINTON.
Tonnage 7469 grt, dim. 139.3 x 17.4m, length bpp. 134.2m,
One steam engine ?hp, one screw, speed 13 knots.
March 1921 completed.

MOUNT CAROLL and MOUNT CLINTON had been outfitted as third-class passenger ships for employment in the transatlantic immigrant trade, but when the Harding administration imposed immigration restrictions, Harriman was forced to refit the two ships as freighters. There were already far too many freighters in transatlantic service however, and Harriman was soon forced to sell both ships.

1925 Sold to Matson Navigation Co. Inc. In San Francisco, USA renamed in MAUNAWILI, named after a waterfall in Hawaii.
1925 Refitted in a cargo vessel, tonnage 7409 gross.
Not much information about the career for Matson, only that she was used as a troopship in World War II

In Hawaii after World War II there was a critical shortage of workers on the pineapple and sugar plantations in Hawaii.
And the Hawaiian were looking for cheap labour, they had good experience from the past with the Philippine workers.
14 January 1946 the first group of immigrants were transported to Hawaii on board the MAUNAWILI, and it took four voyages to ship these labourers.
14 June 1946 was the last voyage arriving in Hilo.

1946 Sold to C.Konialidis, reamed in SOCRATES, flag Panama.
1948 sold to Soc. Industrial Maritime Financiere Ariona Panama S.A., Panama, not renamed.
1953 Sold to Transatlantic Financiera Industrial S.A., Panama not renamed.
The same year sold to Southern Shipping Co, S.A., Monrovia, Liberia, renamed in SOUTHERN ALBATROSS.
End 1955 sold to Marinos & Frangos, Nassau, Bahamas and renamed PORTARITISSA.
04 July 1958 arrived in Osaka, Japan and was broken up by Sangyo Shinko.
