She was built as a diesel electric attack submarine by Dalwoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME). Geoje, South Korea for the Korean Navy.
Her hull was laid down on May 17, 2016, launched as the DOSAN AHN CHANGHO (SS-083 ) on September 14, 2018, as one of the three DOSAN AHN GANG-HO- class submarines.
She was commissioned on August 14, 2021.
The ROKS DOSAN AHN GANG-HO is the first of the three 3,000- ton, KSS- III Batch- 1 class submarines built with advanced homegrown technologies to bolster the country's
underwater defence capabilities against North Korean threats.
It was delivered to the Navy in 2021, while the ROOKS SHIN CHAR-HO , the third and final submarine of the KISS-III Batch-1- class, was delivered in 2024.
The DOSAN AHN GANGHO class are equipped with the Korean Vertical Launching System which will be able to carry up to 10 indigenous "Chonryong" land- attack cruise missiles and "Hyunmoo" submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM), becoming the first submarines in the South Korean navy to have this kind of capability.
They will also have many other improvements compared to their predecessors built with a greater degree of South Korean technology, especially in the later batches, which will include Samsung SDI lithium- ion batteries.
Measured to displace over 3,800 tonnes (3,700 long tons) submerged during sea trials, they are the largest conventional submarines ever built by South Korea.
The Batch II vessels will increase their displacement by approximately 450 t (440 long tons) (4,250 t, 4,180 long tons submerged), according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. In 2025, listed as in active service
