
The name “chata” is given in Mozambique to a small flat-bottomed boat used for net fishing from beaches in the vicinity of Maputo on the south coast.
Overhanging bow terminates in a raked bow transom that rises in a semicircle above the gunwale; wide, shallow square stern; wale along each side. She is open with 3 – 4 benches; stern notched for the steering oar used when sailing.
Generally rowed; also poled. When sailed, sets a lateen sail well forward uses an oar as a rudder.
Reported lengths 5-8 meter.
