Jón Forseti

Post by shipstamps » Sun Mar 15, 2009 5:47 pm

January 1907 marked a turning point in the history of Icelandic fisheries when Jón forseti, a new 230 BRT trawler, arrived at Reykjavík harbour. The trawler was owned by the Alliance fishing company and it was the first distant-water trawler to be built for Icelanders. Fisheries were excellent and the trawler seems to have been fully paid for in a few years. Later that year another trawler, Marz, owned by the Iceland Company Ltd., came to the country, marking the robust beginnings of the Icelandic trawler era. Twenty years after its arrival in Iceland, Jón forseti went ashore at Stafnes. This accident contributed greatly towards the founding of Iceland’s Life-Saving Association.
