Hydra HMS

For detail of ship please see earlier entry.
The following has kindly been sent in by Lester May.
After the surrender of the Argentines on 14 Jun 82, HMS Hydra remained in the islands, serving as a floating doctor. We were at anchor in Fox Bay on 16 Aug 82 when, by chance, I became aware that the issue of the first stamps post surrender were to be made and that Fox Bay was the only other post mark for the islands other than Port Stanley.

Thus, I arranged by radio with the postmaster locally in Fox Bay to have a few first day covers made up - my mistake was not numbering each of them. I have one or two and the Captain - Commander R J Campbell RN - who signed over the ship's stamp had another. There were no more than ten to twenty at most. I was the supply officer of HMS Hydra from 1980-83 and have written a history for Wikipedia - see  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Hydra_(A144)

The first day cover may be of interest to you and visitors to your site. The stamps are pretty dull and I wish they had been real Falklands Islands pictures, like wrecks or maps! But I suppose, post-war, the FIG was wanting to show its British connections. I think the stamps were originally to have been issued earlier, but the date was postponed owing to the invasion and occupation.
