October 1865 laid down as BRILANTE but January 1869 renamed.
18 January 1869 launched under the name CARACCIOLO.
Displacement 1.553 ton full load 1.670 tons. Dim. 64.30 x 10.94 x 4.97m.(draught)
One 4-cyl steam engine 973 ihp., speed 9.2knots. Bunker capacity 132 ton coal.
Range 960 miles against 8½ knots.
Armament when built 6 – 160mm ML guns.
Crew 247.
20 July 1870 completed.
After commissioned she was the flagship of the South American Division from 1871-1873.
1875 till 1880, armament was increased with 1 – 15 inch torpedo tube. She was then used as a training ship for torpedo specialists
From 1881-1884 she circumnavigated the world, during which the Magellan Strait and Chilean Islands were surveyed.
Armament 1893: 2 –75mm and 4 –57mm guns.
Between 1893/94 her engines removed and used as a sailing vessel. Her sailplane and armament modified.
10 March 1907 discarded.
