R.M.S. Medina, wooden-hulled, paddle-wheel steamship, square stern, 3-masted, barquentine rigged, built by Thos. and John White, at Cowes, Isle of Wight. Launched on July 6, 1841. Engined by Edward Bury, of Liverpool. Tonnage (old measurement) 1,800 tons. She made her first sailing from Southampton, January 27, 1842. Her second voyage was from Southampton on April 15, 1842, carrying 64 passengers, including the Governor of Jamaica, the Earl of Elgin. As she left Southampton a shore battery gave a parting salute of 19 guns. The crossing was uneventful and she arrived at Turks Island at midnight on May 11. As the transfer vessels were inside the harbour waiting to take on the passengers from the Medina to the other islands for which they were bound, Capt. Burney of the Medina decided to enter the harbour. The channel was poorly lighted and the Medina got off her course at 1.00 a.m. and grounded upon a reef. No lives were lost, the Medina, however, was immovable and became a total loss.
