Re: FAUTASI
The $1stamp shows us “fautasi longboats” racing in the 50th Anniversary of Samoa’s Independence Day Celebration.
The fautasi races taken place in Apia harbour.
The Samoa Post gives by the issues:
2012 marks 50 years since the Samoan flag was first raised signaling the birth of the Independent State of Samoa. Following 63 years of foreign administration by Germany (1899 –1914) and New Zealand (1914 – 1962), Samoa was the first Pacific Island country to regain political autonomy. A Constitutional Convention, led to Samoa adopting a national constitution based on Christian principles and Samoan traditions.
Samoa had become the first Pacific Island country to regain political autonomy.
Since 1962, annual Independence celebrations have moved from the 1 of January to the 1 of June. This is to take advantage of the pleasant weather in Samoa that time of the year. The official flag-raising ceremony this year will take place on 1 June at Ti’afau. A line-up of foreign leaders and international representatives have been invited to this special occasion. The Government of Samoa will conduct a flag raising ceremony on June 1st 2012 and has also approved a week of national celebrations to coincide with this event. A 50th Anniversary logo has been designed by Tu’uaga Aviata and Leiataua Eteuati, and is shown above.
