Maranon

The issue of Peru, shows the river gunboat Maranon a sister ship to the Ocayali. She displaces 365 tons and her dimensions are 154.75ft. x 32ft. x 4ft., and carries two 3in. and seven 20mm. A.A. guns. Propelled by two sets of British Polar diesel engines, her cruising speed is 12 knots. With a complement of 40 she has a range of 6,000 miles, and was designed for carrying naval officers and men on police duties in the Upper Amazon. She appears to have a large superstructure, but this is built entirely of aluminium alloy. Built by John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., at Woolston, Southampton she was launched in April 1951. The vessel is based on Iquitos.

Built as patrol vessel for the upper Amazon River under yard No 4127 by John I Thornycroft at Woolston, U.K. for the navy of Peru.
February 1951 keel laid down.
23 April 1951 launched under the name MARANON. (CF402).
Displacement 365 tons full load, dim. 47.22 x 9.75 x 1.22m (draught)
Two Polar diesels, 800 bhp. speed 12 knots. Range 6.000 miles.
Armament 1 – 3/50dp, 1 – 40mm, 2 dual 20mm.
Crew 40.
Superstructure made of aluminum alloy, given her less weight, and less draught.

After arrival at Peru stationed in Iquitas. Used for police duties on the upper Amazon River.
2010 Still in service.
