
The 80k stamp depicts the Russian battleship Marat (formerly the Pet ropavlovsk) which was reputed to be the most unhealthy, insanitary and badly ventilated warship afloat. Built at the Baltic Works, she was laid down in 1909, launched in 1911 and completed in 1914. Her particulars were length 619ft, beam 87ft., draught 27ft.. main armament 12 12in and 16 4.7in. guns, speed 23 knots and complement 1,125. She was scrapped following heavy damage by air attack in 1941.
