Baroy

Three Norwegian stamps were issued in 1944, depicting vessels being bombed or torpedoed. The stamps were issued ostensibly for the benefit of shipwrecked Norwegian mariners. Actually they were part of a Nazi propaganda campaign, a hopeless one, to stir up anti-British feeling in German-occupied Norway. Similar types of propaganda appeared in Holland and France where stamps were issued during the occupation showing Dutch and French admirals, with their ships, who had fought against Britain. The scenes depicted on the Norwegian issue are as follows —The 10+10 ore stamp shows the sinking of the steamer Baroy on Friday, September 12, 1940, by an aerial torpedo from a Royal Navy plane, between Burag and Tranoy in the Vestforden, close to Narvik. Aboard the ship were 54 Norwegian passengers, the ship's crew and "uninvited guests" making a total of 106 persons.
The Baroy was built in 1909 at Trondheim and was owned by the Ofotens Shipping Company. She was a vessel of 424 gross tons on dimensions 143.8ft. x 24.1ft.x 16.3ft. and was registered at Narvik.
