Rattlesnake HMS

This steam and sail powered corvette cruised the South Atlantic soon after being commissioned, visiting Ascension Island and St Helena. Iron built and fitted with rifled muzzel loaders, she was powerful for her size.

HMS RATTLESNAKE 1868. A wooden screw corvette of 2,431 tons with 16-8", 1-7" and 4-40pdr guns. Built at Chatham Dockyard 9.7.1861. Jason class. Although powered by steam, she was ship-rigged on 8th September 1867 was commissioned for a second tour of duty off West coast of Africa. Arrived back at Devonport in 1874 to pay-off. Was put on sale list August 1880. N.B. The unofficial ships badge of this 'Rattlesnake appeared on a stamp of Ascension in 1969, SG No.121)
