NOORD BEVELAND AMERONGEN and VISVLIET

In 2002 the Netherlands issued a miniature sheet for the International Stamp
Show AMPHILEX 2002 in the RAI at Amsterdam.

The M.S. was issued for the 400th anniversary of the Verenigde Oost Indische
Compagnie (V.O.C.).

On the stamps are three ships of the VOC depict and according the designers of
the stamp Pieter Brattinga and Eric Coppenhagen they used a old drawing by a
unknown artist, which shows “DE NEDERLANDSE OOST-INDIESCHE RETOER-VLOOT IN DEN
JAARE 1760” (The Dutch East India return fleet in the year 1760)

difficult to understand for not Dutch speakers.

According the designers they have used the first vessel with on board the
commander Koert Rozeboom he was on board the NOORD-BEVELAND, the middle lower
ship the AMERONGEN and the last ship of the fleet the VISVLIET used for the
design. As seen on the stamp from the left to the right.

NOORD-BEVELAND named after an island in the Dutch Province Zeeland.

She was built in 1756 on the VOC yard in Zeeland, Netherlands for the Chamber of
the VOC of Zeeland.
Tonnage 1.150 ton.

Sailed from Rammekens near Flushing on 14 October 1758 under command of Jacob
Reysik with a crew of 197, 152 soldiers and 6 craftsmen and 1 passenger.
19 February 1759 arrived at the Cape, at the Cape 26 crew, 41 soldiers
disembarked, embarked 3 soldiers, and sailed on 05 March 1759.
20 June 1759 arrived at Batavia, during the passage 19 sailors and 28 soldiers
and the passenger died.

01 November 1759 sailed from Batavia with on board 112 crew, 12 soldiers, 4
craftsmen and 2 passengers.
08 January 1760 arrived at the Cape where 5 crew disembarked.
19 February 1760 sailed from the Cape.
13 June 1760 arrived at Rammekens, with on board a cargo valued 267.823 Dutch
Guilders.
During the voyage 5 men died.
During this voyage Koert Rozeboom commander of the fleet was on board the
NOORD-BEVELAND.

09 January 1761 she sailed from Rammekens under command of Jakob Reysik with on
board 174 crew, 83 soldiers, 10 craftsmen and 4 passengers, one of this
passengers was a female slave.
20 April 1761 arrived at the Cape.
07 May 1761 sailed from the Cape.
18 July 1761 arrived at Batavia, during the passage 9 crew, 5 soldiers and 2
craftsmen died.

22 February 1763 sailed from Ceylon under command of Capt. Reysik, this voyage
she made a call at False Bay, South Africa on 19 May 1763, at that time she had
on board a crew of 106.
05 July 1763 sailed from False Bay.
13 October 1763 arrived at Rammekens with on board a cargo valued 528.368 Dutch
Guilders.
During the passage 2 men died.

08 October 1764 sailed from Texel under command of Capt. Simon Bot, with on
board 199 crew, 145 soldiers and 12 craftsmen.
15 January 1765 arrived at the Cape.
29 January 1765 sailed from the Cape.
02 May 1765 arrived at Batavia, during the passage 19 crew, 16 soldiers died.
After she arrived at Batavia he sailed through to China.

05 January 1766 sailed from China, under command of Capt Simon Bot, and a crew
of 115.
09 April 1766 arrived at the Cape.
21 April 1766 sailed from the Cape.
15 July 1766 arrived at Texel, with a cargo valued 895.319 Dutch Guilders.
During the passage 2 men died.

25 December 1766 sailed from Texel under command of Capt. Michiel Hendrik
Wunder, with on board 366 persons.
23 March 1767 arrived at the Cape.
09 April 1767 sailed from the Cape.
28 June 1767 arrived at Ceylon, during the passage 62 persons died.

02 February 1768 sailed from Ceylon under command of Capt. Michiel Hendrik
Wunder and a crew of 125.
16 April 1768 arrived at the Cape.
03 May 1768 sailed from the Cape.
27 August 1768 arrived at Texel, with a cargo valued 439.688 Dutch Guilders, not
a single soul was lost during the passage.

04 September 1769 sailed from Rammekens under command of Arie Fransz. With on
board 264 persons.
15 January 1770 arrived at the Cape.
04 February 1710 sailed from the Cape.
01 May 1770 arrived at Batavia. Not given that she lost a person during the
voyage.

08 November 1772 sailed from Batavia under command of Arend van der Deuren with
on board 120 persons. Arend van der Deuren was also this voyage the commander of
the fleet.
07 January 1773 arrived at the Cape.
04 February 1773 sailed from the Cape.
26 May 1773 arrived at Texel, with a cargo valued 182.854 Dutch Guilders.

After her arrival she was used as a hospital ship.
09 October 1773 laid up and hulked.

AMERONGEN, named after a place in the Netherlands.

1754 Built on the VOC yard in Amsterdam for the Chamber of the VOC at Amsterdam.
Tonnage 1.150 ton.

02 February 1756 sailed from Texel under command of Christiaan Hansen, with on
board 184 crew, 132 soldiers, 11 craftsmen and 2 passengers.
From 04 till 24 February she made a call at the Duins where one soldier
deserted, and S. Tiago from 05 till 12 April.
11 June 1756 arrived at the Cape.
05 July 1756 sailed from the Cape.
07 September 1756 arrived Batavia, during the voyage 1 crew, 5 soldiers and 1
craftsman died.
01 November 1759 sailed from Batavia under command of Christiaan Hansen and 100
crew, 10 soldiers, 5 craftsmen and 3 passengers.
08 January 1760 arrived at the Cape, were Christiaan Blom relieved Capt. Hansen.
19 February 1760 sailed from the Cape.
12 June 1760 arrived at Texel with a cargo valued 237.887 Dutch Guilders.

After arrival was she renamed in OVERNES.



09 May 1761 she sailed from Texel under command of Capt. Christoffel Blom, with
on board 192 crew, 141 soldiers, 6 craftsmen and 8 passengers.

She made a call at Duins (Downs) from 12 till 15 May, at Duins 4 crew members
and 8 soldiers were pressed by the English, most probably for the Royal Navy.
Then a call at S Tiago from 23 till 28 June, where 3 crew and 3 soldiers
deserted or died.
13 September 1761 arrived at the Cape.
03 October 1761 sailed from the Cape.
19 December 1761 arrived at Batavia, during the passage 7 crew and 14 soldiers
died.

21 November 1763 sailed from Ceylon under command of Capt. Jan Hoist.
03 February 1764 arrived at the Cape, with on board 135 crew.
03 March 1764 sailed from the Cape.
10 June 1764 arrived at Texel, with a cargo valued 348.686 Dutch Guilders.

18 December 1764 sailed from Texel under command of Kornelis Pietersen with on
board 341 persons, total.
03 May 1765 arrived at the Cape.
17 May 1765 sailed from the cape.
04 July 1765 arrived at Ceylon.

18 November 1765 sailed from Ceylon under command of Capt. Kornelis Pietersen.
10 February 1766 arrived at the Cape, with on board 743 crew (looks that is a
mistake)
01 March 1766 sailed from the Cape.
15 June 1766 arrived at Texel with a cargo valued 334.326 Dutch Guilders.

16 May 1767 sailed from Texel under command of Capt. Willem van Braam with on
board 299 persons.
24 August 1767 arrived at the Cape.
08 September 1767 sailed from the Cape.
24 November 1767 arrived at Batavia.

She made not more voyages between the Netherlands and the Dutch East Indies,
most probably used in the waters of the Far East.

09 January 1772 laid up in the Indies, most probably hulked.



VISVLIET, (Fishbrook)
1752 Built on the VOC yard in Zeeland for the Chamber of Zeeland.
Tonnage 880 ton.

25 July 1753 sailed from Rammekens under command of Capt. Leendert Fruit van
Hertog, with on board 152 crew, 84 soldiers and 4 craftsmen. She carried among
other things 325.000 Dutch Guilders in cash on board that voyage.

She made a call at Portsmouth from 07 August till 06 September, and at S. Tiago
from 13 till 18 October, in the latest place 8 crew and 1 soldier deserted.
14 January 1754 arrived at the Cape.
07 February 1754 sailed from the Cape.
20 May 1754 arrived at Batavia, during the passage 1 crew and 1 soldier died.

02 February 1757 she sailed from Bengal under command of Capt. Frederik
Schouten.
30 May 1757 arrived at Simon’s Bay, South Africa.
19 June 1757 sailed from Simon’s Bay.
16 October 1757 arrived at Rammekens, with a cargo valued 584.566 Dutch
Guilders.

15 May 1758 sailed from Rammekens under command of Capt. Justus Baak with on
board 135 crew, 71 soldiers and 2 craftsmen.
14 September 1758 arrived at the Cape.
15 October 1758 sailed from the Cape.
26 December 1758 arrived at Batavia. During the voyage 14 crew and 9 soldiers
died.

19 November 1759 sailed from Bengal under command of Capt. Justus Blom.
31 January 1760 arrived at the Cape. At that time she had a crew on board of 101
men.
19 February 1760 sailed from the Cape, in the fleet under command of Koert
Rozeboom.
13 June 1760 arrived at Rammekens, with a cargo of 795.519 Dutch Guilders.

05 August 1761 sailed from Rammekens under command of Capt. Louis de Jonge and
149 crew, 63 soldiers and 12 craftsmen.
Made a call at Duins from 09 till 10 August, where a seaman died.
Between Duins and the Cape, two soldiers were taken over by a British vessel.
25 December 1761 arrived at the Cape.
26 January 1762 sailed from the Cape.
08 May 1762 arrived at Batavia, during the passage she lost 4 crew and 5
soldiers.

19 January 1763 the VISVLIET sailed from Bengal, not a captain or total crew
given, she was lost between Bengal and the Cape with all hands.
