The Piri Reis is a welcome addition to the growing number of submarines depicted on stamps. She was formerly the U.S.S. Mapiro, of the "Balao" class, built by the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, launched on November 9, 1944 and completed on April 30, 1945. She is of all-welded construction with a high standard of accommodation, including separate messing and sleeping compartments. She was transferred to Turkey on March 18, 1960 at the San Francisco Navy Yard and renamed Pin Reis after a seaman and geographer who lived From 1475 to 1554. Reis participated in the Spanish campaign during which he rose to the rank of vice-admiral.
The submarine now carries the NATO pennant No. 5343. She has a displacement of 1,526 tons (standard), 1,829 tons (surface), and 2,424 tons (submerged). Her dimensions are 311 ft. 8 ins. x 27 ft. 2 ins. x 13 ft. 8 ins, and she is fitted with two 5-in., two 40-m.m. and four machine guns. She has ten 21-in, torpedo tubes (six bow, four stern) and carries 24 torpedoes; her machinery consists of General Motors 2-stroke oil engines of 6,500 b.h.p., giving a surface speed of 194 knots, with electric motors driving her at nine knots submerged. There is provision for 200 tons of fuel oil and she has an operational limit of 12,000 miles at 10 knots. Her complement is 78 to 85.

Built as a submarine under yard No 374 by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company, Manitowoc, Wisconsin for the USA Navy.
30 May 1944 laid down.
09 November 1944 launched as the USS MAPIRO (SS-376), christened by Mrs. Philip H. Ross. She was one of the Balao class. Named after the mapiro a fish in the waters of the West Indies and in the waters along the Atlantic coast of Central America and Mexico.
Displacement 1,526 tons surfaced, 2,424 tons submerged. Dim. 95.02 x 8.31 x 5.13m.
Powered by four General Motors diesel engines, 6,400 shp and two electro motors, 5,400 shp., twin shafts, speed 20.25 knots. Surfaced, 8.75 knots submerged.
Range by a speed of 10 knots, 11,000 miles surfaced, 48 hours at 2 knots submerged.
Diving depth 120 meter.
Armament 10 – 21 inch torpedo tubes, six forward and four aft. 1 – 5 inch deck gun and a Bofors 40mm AAand Oerlikon 20mm AA canon.
Crew 80.
30 April 1945 commissioned under command of Commander Vincent A. Sisler Jr.


Following trials on Lake Michigan, MAPIRO entered a floating drydock at Lockport, Ill., and was towed down the Chicago and Mississippi Rivers to New Orleans, La. to be readied for duty in the South Pacific. She sailed for the Canal Zone 31 May, arriving off Balboa 5 June for training.
On the 28th the submarine got underway for Hawaii in company with submarine CUTLASS (SS-478), arriving Pearl Harbor 15 July.

MAPIRO sailed for the Marianas on her first war patrol 4 August, arriving off Saipan the day Japan surrendered, 15 August. She remained on observation patrol until returning to the west coast in September, arriving at San Francisco for deactivation by the 25th.

On 16 March 1946, MAPIRO decommissioned to enter the Pacific Reserve Fleet at Mare Island, Calif., 1 January 1947.
In 1960 the MAPIRO was converted to a fleet Snorkel submarine.
On 18 March 1960, the submarine was transferred on loan under the Military Assistance Program to Turkey and continues through 1968 to serve the Turkish navy as PIRI REIS (S-343).
She was named after Piri Reis (ca1465-1554) an Ottoman admiral and cartographer.
16 May 1960 she left San Francisco and via the Panama Canal she arrived in Gölcük, Turkey on 23 June 1960.
One day later she has commissioned TCG PIRI REIS (S343)
1973 Bought by Turkey

PIRI REIS was disposed of in 1973. Former MAPIRO was stricken from the US Navy Register on 1 August 1973.
20 November 1973 decommissioned. (most probably scrapped)
