La Boudeuse (De Bourgainville)

BOUGAINVILLE. Comte LOUIS ANTOINEDE (1729-1811)
Best known as a French naval officer and navigator although he was a professional soldier until he age of 37. However he had ambitions seawards and so at his own expense he established a colonising settlement in the Falkland Islands. This met with objections from Spain and when Bouganville sailed in December 1766 in command of the frigate La BOUDEUSE and accompanied by the store ship L'ETOILE. His first task was the evacuation of the colony.
This completed, the expedition passed through the Straits of Magellan and crossed the Pacific in the trade wind belt to Tahiti, which Bougainville formally annexed, though it had been discovered eight months previously by the British Captain Wallis. The Frenchman's description of the island and its inhabitants gave support to the contemporary cult of “the noble savage”. Sailing on westwards, rediscovering Quiros's Espiritu Santo, Bougainville found his way barred by the Great Barrier Reef in latitude 15 degrees south. To withdraw from this area of perilous lee shores, he beat his way to windward until he could weather the eastern tip of New Guinea.
Passing through the Solomon Islands, one of which today bears his name and visiting New Britain, the Moluccas and Batavia, he completed his circumnavigation at St. Malo in March 1769, having lost only seven men out of the 200 of his company, an achievement remarkable for the times. During the War of American Independence (1775-82) Bougainville commanded a division of de Grasses's fleet at the Battle of the Saints in 1782, blame for the disaster of which was, in part, justifiably laid at his door by de Grasse.
During the French Revolution he narrowly escaped becoming a victim of the 'terror' and later gained the favour of Napoleon who made him a Count of the Empire, a Senator and a member of the Legion of Honour. The flamboyant climbing plant Bougainvillaea is named after him.

BOUDEUSE, French Frigate, first of the name in the French Navy, built at Nantes Shipyard and laid down in 1765 by Raffeau, at Indret, near Nantes, an island on the River Loire. Launched, March 25, 1766 and commissioned by Bougainville on November 1st, that year. Her world voyage of two years and four months, arriving home in March, 1769, was the first French circumnavigation of the globe. After her return the frigate was based at Le Havre in 1773. In 1778 she was in
the West Indies. She towed the BELLE POULE back to Brest in June 1778, after her brush with H.M.S. ARETHUSA. Finally, she was broken up, after many engagements, at Malta, in 1800, when the British Fleet was blockading Valletta.
