Lautaro

The Lautaro, ex-Priwall, was a 4-masted steel barque built in 1919-20 by Blohm and Voss, Hamburg, for Reederei F. Laeisz. Port of registry, Hamburg. Gross tonnage 3,185, net 2,834 tons. Length 323 ft. 1 in., beam 47 ft. 1 in., depth 26 ft. 3 in. When delivered to her owners she was put in the South American nitrate trade. the Second World War. On the outbreak of war in 1939 she was at Valparaiso ready to load a homeward cargo and was interned there; she was seized when Chile entered the war in 1941.
The vessel was given auxiliary power by the installing of two 600 b.h.p. direct-reversible oil engines, each driving its own shaft carrying a 4-bladed propeller. This work was carried out by Atlas Imperial Diesel Engine Company, of Oakland, U.S.A. Renamed Lautaro after one of the ships of the Chilean Navy of 1818, she was provided with accommodation for 36 cadet officers, 135 other ranks and 12 officers and instructors.In February 1945, whilst bound for Iquique, with a cargo of nitrate. Fire broke out in the fore hold and she was a total loss, 20 lives being lost.
