Built as research/supply/pass./cargo vessel by Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre, Le Havre, France for Cie. Des Messageries Maritimes, Dunkirk, France.
Launched under the name MARION DUFRESNE.
Tonnage 6.640 gross, 3.044 net, 3.782dwt, dim. 112.10 x 18.50 x 6.29m. (draught).
Powered by two 8-cyl. Pielstick engines,3.500 bhp. each., one shaft, variable pitch propeller, 15 knots. Kamewa bow and stern thruster each 600hp.
Bunker capacity 1.020 m.t. heavy fuel and 366 m.t. diesel oil
Accommodation for 110 passengers and 37 crew.
Two hold with a capacity of 3.425 cubic meter.
Loading/discharging gear, two cranes of 5 ton each, one derrick of 40 tons and one crane of 10 ton.
Fitted out with an A Frame on the stern, lifting capacity 10 tons.
1973 Completed.
She was built as a replacement for GALLIENI and was used for a regular communication and logistical support for three Indian Ocean districts of French South Antarctic, Kerguelen, Crozet, St Paul and Amsterdam Island.
12 April 1973 sailed out from France for her maiden voyage to the Antarctic.
On board was a library, conference room, cinema, hospital, bar, café and recreation room.
Did have a landing platform and hangar on the foredeck for helicopters. Could accommodate 3 helicopters.
18 April 1995 out of service, during her time under French flag she sailed a distance of 59 time around the world.
1995 Renamed in MARION after she was replaced by a new MARION DUFRESNE.
The same year sold to Alexander Navigation Co. Ltd., Malta and renamed FRES. Homeport La Valletta, Malta.
2004 Sold to Indian shipbreakers, and she was boarded off Alang on 22 June 2004.
