London HMS 1961

Post by shipstamps » Sun Aug 10, 2008 6:29 pm

H.M.S. London is a guided missile destroyer of the County class, pennant number D16, though her appearance looks more like that of a light cruiser. She was built by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson at Wallsend. Laid down on 26.2.1960, she was launched 7.11.1961; and commissioned 4.11.1963. Standard displacement 5,440 tons; 6,200 full load. Length on waterline 505ft.; overall 520ft. 5in. Speed 30 knots. Armed with four 4.5-in, guns in two twin turrets forward and two 20mm guns (single), Ship's badge is a Red Dagger, taken from the coat-of-arms of the City of London. The vessel was launched by the Duchess of Gloucester. The main function of this class of destroyer is the provision of air defence against both missiles and aircraft for a force of ships. Her main armament is the "Seaslug" guided weapon system. Quadruple "Seacat" launchers are sited on each side of the ship. Full provision is made for anti-submarine operations with the latest sonar equipment. She has a Wessex helicopter, which is armed with dipping sonar and homing torpedoes. There are many other features which make the County Class ships very important units in the Royal Navy.
