Built as a American mercantile armed with 16 guns under the name BRILLIANT.
Tonnage 285 ton (bm), dim. 89.3 x 27 x 12.2ft., length of keel 73.5ft.

02 September 1776 purchased, where after she was fitted out at Deptford from 04 September till 14 November 1776 as warship, most probably for convoy duty.
September 1776 commissioned as HMS DRUID under command of Captain Peter Carteret.
Crew 100.
On September 4th. 1777, being in the latitude of 40 deg. 20 min north, and longitude 50 deg. 17 min. west, with the North American trade under the convoy of CAMEL (20), and the DRUID and WEAZLE sloops, discovered a strange sail bearing down on them, which was the RALEIGH; at five p.m. she had approached within pistol shot of the DRUID, which was at some distance to windward of the convoy, and hoisted American colours, and at the same time desired Capt. Carteret to surrender to Congress, followed by firing a broadside into DRUID. Capt. Carteret was mortally wounded that he was obliged to be carried off the deck, and the same time the Master was killed. Lieut. John Bourchier . on whom the command devolved, maintained the action with great bravery, until half past six, when the enemy howled to windward and made sail. Lieut. Bourchier used every effort to pursue her, but the DRUID was a complete wreck, her masts, rigging and sails cut to pieces, and five feet of water in her hold. The CAMEL and the WEAZLE were too far to leeward to render any assistance. The enemy appeared to be a frigate of 38 to 40 guns. When Capt. Finch of CAMEL joined the DRUID he found that she was in too shattered to continue the voyage so ordered Lieut. Bourchier to proceed with her to England, where he was promoted to the rank of master and commander as a reward for his bravery.
After arrival in the U.K. was she repaired and refitted in Portsmouth from September till October 1777. September 1777 under command of Comdr. John Bourchier. 10 February 1778 sailed for Jamaica. 16 September 1779 on orders of the Admirality refitted in a fireship in Portsmouth, renamed in BLAST. October 1779 recommissioned as fireship under command of Cmdr George Bowen, crew 45. March 1780 sailed for the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. September 1782 sailed for America from the Leeward Islands.
