TRIBUNE HMS 1939 submarine

Built as a submarine under yard No 570 by Scott’s Shipbuilding, Greenock for the Royal Navy.
03 March 1937 laid down.
08 December 1938 launched as the HMS TRIBUNE (N76) one of the T Class.
Displacement 1.090 tons surfaced, 1.575 tons submerged, dim. 83.8 x 8.1 x 4.4m. (draught).
Powered by Admiralty diesel engines, 2.500hp each, speed 15.25 knots surfaced, 9 knots submerged.
Range 4.500 miles by a speed of 11 knots surfaced.
Diving depth 91 meters maximum
Armament 1 – 4inch deck gun, 6 internal forward facing torpedo tubes and 4 external forward facing torpedo tubes, carried also 6 reload torpedoes.
Crew 59.
17 October 1939 commissioned, under command of Lt. Commander G.P.S. Davies.

First patrol service in the North Sea off the Norway coast.
17 January 1940 in the Skagerrak she fires 6 torpedoes against a German U-boat in a position about 15 miles east-north-east of Skagen, Denmark, all torpedoes missed.
22 June 1940 she attacked by torpedoes an enemy merchant off Standlandet, Norway but again all torpedoes missed.
06 September 1940 she attacks the German submarine U-56 with two torpedoes about 15 miles north-east of St Kilda, Hebrides, the crew heard explosions but her claim for a hit were discounted.
16 December 1940 she attacks the German tanker KARIBISCHES MEER (6.864 gross) in the Bay of Biscay east of Ile de Yeu, France, all torpedoes missed.
19 December 1940 she attacks the German freighter BIRKENFELS (6.322 gross) also in the Bay of Biscay west-south-west of Belle Ile, France, all torpedoes missed.

February 1941acted as escort for North American convoys, based at Halifax.
Escorted convoy HX 126 which left Halifax on 10 May 1941 bound for Liverpool, she was in the rear of the convoy when the convoy was attacked off Iceland.
October 1942 patrolling off Toulon when she was based at Gibraltar, during the landings in North Africa, thereafter she operated from Algiers.
10 January 1943 she attacks the French merchant DALNY (6.617 gross) in a position about 15 miles from San Remo, Italy. The DALNY did not sink but was beached to prevent her from sinking.
The next day the TRIBUNE torpedoed and damaged the DALNY again which was beached off Cape Cervo, Italian Riviera.
22 March 1943 torpedoed and damaged the German tanker (former Norway) PRESIDENT HERRENSCHMIDT in position 39 14N 15.59E, she was towed by her escort the Italian torpedoboat SIRIO, the tow was later taken over by the Italian tugs SALVATORE PRIMO and ATHLETO who delivered her in Naples.
30 March 1943 she attacks the Italian freighter BENEVENTO about 50 miles north of Ustica, north of Palermo, Sicily without success.
April 1943 she returned to the U.K.
August 1943 operated from the Clyde.
November 1945 paid off.
July 1947 sold for scrap and broken up by Ward in Milford Haven in November that year.

At some time in 1943 she appears in the Crown Film Unit production of “Close Quarters” as HMS TYRANT.
