MARCILIO DIAS destroyer

On this stamp issued by Brazil in 2004 is depict the destroyer MARCILIO DIAS.
Built by the yard of Ilha das Cobras, Rio de Janeiro, for the Brazilian Navy, after a USA design.
The material used for the building came from the USA.
20 July 1940 launched under the name MARCILIO DIAS, she was the fifth ship under that name by the Brazilian Navy, and named after a seaman of the Imperial Navy, a hero in the Battle of Riachuelo, War of Triple Alliance (1874-1870) (the war between Argentina-Brazil-Uruguay against Paraguay.) Two sisters GREENHALG and MARIS E BARROS.
Displacement 1.500 tons, dim. 357 x 34 5/6 x 9 5/6Ft (mean draught), length bpp. 341 ft.
Powered by General Electric Co geared turbines, 42.800 shp., speed 36.5 knots. Steam was supplied by 4 high-pressure water tube boilers of Express type by Babcock & Wilcock.
Bunker capacity 500 tons oil.
Radius 6.000 miles against a speed of ?
Armament: 5 – 5 inch, 4 – 40mm AA and 4 – 20mm AA, 12 – 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Complement 190.
29 November 1943 commissioned.

The design in general was similar to the Mahan Class of the USA Navy, and the class was armed with guns manufactured in the USA.
02 July 1944 The USA transport General W.A.Mann (AP-112) sailed from Rio de Janeiro, escorted by the Brazilian destroyers MARCILLO DIAS, MARIZ E BARROS and GREENHALG, with the first units of the Italy bound Brazilian Expeditionary Force.

She was scrapped in 1966.
