Built as a whaler in 1841 at Scituate, Mass. for Samuel Soper, Provincetown, Mass. USA.
Launched under the name SAMUEL & THOMAS.
Brig rigged, tonnage 191 tons.
Sailed 19 March 1841 from Provincetown under command of Capt. Soper for the Atlantic whaling grounds, returned January 1842 with on board 300 brls. Sperm-oil.
Sailed again on 10 February 1842, under command of Capt. Soper for the Atlantic whaling grounds, returned on 08 March 1843 with on board 700 brls. sperm-oil.
Sailed 15 July 1843 under command of Capt. Nickerson for the Atlantic whaling grounds, returned 10 October 1844, with on board 290 brls. sperm-oil.
Sailed on 17 December 1844 under command of Capt. Swift again for the Atlantic whaling grounds, returned on 29 May 1846 with on board 470 brls. sperm-oil and 16 brls. whale oil.
Sailed 11 September 1846 again under command of Capt. Swift for the Atlantic whaling grounds, returned 13 April 1848 with on board 410 brls. sperm-oil.
1850 Sold Soper her to R.L. Barstow in Mattapoisett, Mass.
Sailed 18 July 1850 from Mattapoisett under command of Capt. Lambert for the Atlantic whaling grounds, she returned 11 June 1852 with on board 449 brls sperm-oil and 22 brls whale oil.
Sailed 05 September 1852 under command of Capt. Ephraim Poole for the Atlantic and Indian Ocean, returned 01 September 1854 with on board 389 brls. sperm-oil and 11 brls. whale-oil.
Sailed 21 February 1855 under command of Capt. Briggs for the whaling grounds of the Indian Ocean and Pacific, returned 29 April 1858 with on board 121 brls. sperm-oil and 274 brls. whale oil, send already home 127 brls. sperm-oil.
Sailed on 03 September 1859 under command of Capt. Asa Hoxie for the Atlantic fishing grounds, returned 29 June 1863, with on board 160 brls. sperm-oil.
Now given rigged as a bark. (A long voyage with a small catch)
After arrival Mattapoisett sold by Barstow to David B. Kempton, New Bedford, Mass.
Sailed on 12 June 1866 under command of Capt. Samuel H. Cromwell for the Atlantic and Pacific whaling grounds. Her tonnage is now given as 132 ton.
During the voyage in 1866 her third mate Thomas Parker fell from aloft, and was killed..
1867 Captain Cromwell fell sick and returned home.
1869 Sold at Talcahuano, Chile
Sent home 943 brls sperm-oil and 2 brls. whale-oil.
She continued sailing from out Talcahuano.
Fate unknown.
For some years she is still mentioned in Record of American and Foreign Shipping 1870, under command of Capt. Freeman, but nowhere in the register is given when she was last reported.
