Although 1974 is the 150th Anniversary of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, the Bailiwick of Guernsey has maintained a life-boat for over 170 years, the first station being established at St. Sampson in 1803. Twenty years later the station was transferred to St. Peter Port, a life-boat shed having been constructed on the Castle Emplacement.
The first named life-boat to be based in Guernsey was the Louisa Hull. This was replaced in 1875 by the vessel depicted on the stamp, the John Lockett. The boat was a gift of Mrs. and the Misses Lockett, of Liverpool, and was at first stationed on one of the northernmost tips of the island. This situation was found to be too remote and the John Lockett was soon returned to the St. Peter Port base, where she served until 1888.
