The Dutch used already from the 17th century schooner-rigged vessels, the hull form and rigging was later perfected in America.

An early example is the ‘Marblehead schooner’, which may have been developed by about 1750 from Chesapeake Bay types. The Marblehead type was a fast, two-masted, fore-and-aft-rigged vessel from 60 to 80 feet overall and up to 90 tons displacements. In time of war she could be armed with eight to twelve 10pdr. cannon and would carry a crew of 30 to 40 men.
Normally was she used for fishing or trading, with much smaller crews.
