REPUBLICA paddle steamer

The name REPUBLICA POPULARA ROMANA does not appear in the documents available at the Museum of the Romanian Marine nor in the registers of that time.
The river passenger boat on this stamp resembles the REPUBLICA during her navy service.

She was built as a paddle steamer by Ganz & Co Danubius Machine-,Waggon-& Shipyard Co.Ltd., Budapest/Újpest for account of the MFTR.
Launched as the CSOBÁNC.
Tonnage225-230 tons, dim. 55.1 x 7 x 1.1m. (draught)
Powered by 550 hp., steam engines.
1916 Completed (have seen also 1903)

During World War I used by the K&K Marine as an armed auxiliary steamer in the Danube Flotilla under the Austrian/Hungarian flag. She was one of the Balaton class
Armament 2 – 66mm 2 -47mm guns and 2 – 7.62mm MG.
After the war seized by the Romanian State.
1919 Renamed in ARAD and used as flag ship by the Romanian Danube Fleet.
1921 Renamed in CAPITAN COMMODOR PAUN, named after a Romanian First War hero.
During World War II renamed in REPUBLICA she took part as command ship in the campaign from 1941 and 1944 based in Sulina.

1946 After the war she was seized by the Soviets, returned in 1951 under Romanian flag.
1951 Again renamed in REPUBLICA after she returned to the Romanian Navy.
1951 Renamed in LOCOTENENT COMANDOR VASILE PAUN.
2003 She was towed from Braila to Tulcea.
After an overhaul and repair in Tulcea she was renamed again in REPUBLICA.
2009 Still at Tulcea as a floating museum ship.
