BRATISLAVA - In honor of shipping on the Danube, the Slovak Post has issued a unique stamp that commemorates the iconic propeller and the KAMZÍK ship. This design piece highlights the rich history of Bratislava and the unforgettable experiences associated with sailing on the Danube.
A new postage stamp commemorating the rich history of shipping on the Danube in Bratislava was issued on Thursday, April 11, 2025. The stamp measures 44.1 × 26.5 mm, is printed in the form of a press sheet with 50 stamps, and is accompanied by a First Day Cover (FDC).
The motif of the stamp and the cover is the iconic Bratislava propeller – a building on the waterfront, a rudder and the fictitious face of a ship's captain. The FDC stamp is decorated with an anchor. The author of the design is Marián Komáček, while the engraving of the FDC cover was created by František Horniak.
The steel printing technique used in printing ensured the high quality of the stamp and envelope, which were created by the company Tiskárna Hradištko.
History of the propeller
The propeller, a symbol of shipping on the Danube, has deep roots in the history of Bratislava . The Danube River has always represented a barrier between its banks, which people crossed through medieval fords, bridges and ferryboats.
In 1893, entrepreneur Heinrich Hörnes launched steamboat operations between today's Ľudovít Štúr Square and Janko Kráľa Park.
The first steamers FRIGYES, IZABELLA and POZSONY were powered by propellers – hence the name “propeller company” . The operation of the propeller was later taken over by the city transport company, and during the 20th century it was also symbolized by the ship DEVÍN.
Ship KAMZIK
The postage stamp depicts the last passenger ferry – KAMZÍK. This double-hulled ship with a capacity of 200 passengers was built in the old shipyard in Bratislava's Zimný prístáv in 1975 and completed in Vlčí hrdl in 1978. With a length of 24.5 meters and a width of approximately 9 meters, it was powered by two ŠKODA ML 634 diesel engines.
The ship was a popular attraction for Bratislava residents until its operation was terminated in 2003. For many, it represented an unforgettable experience of sailing on the Danube.
The new postage stamp and FDC are a reminder of the importance of shipping, which shaped the history of Bratislava. These issues are not only a tribute to technological progress, but also a nostalgic memory of beautiful moments spent on the Danube River.
