Liverpool Bay

Post by john sefton » Wed Oct 21, 2009 9:48 pm

The Liverpool Bay, was built in 1971. The ship was built by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche WerftKiel, Germany, for the Ocean Steamship Group founded by renowned Liverpool shipowner Alfred Holt in 1865.
289.57m in length, the 58,000 tonne Liverpool Bay was one of the new generation of ships designed to handle containers. She could carry more than 2,300 containers and was one of five sisters built at the same time, originally sailing to East Asia.
The Liverpool Bay was one of the first to use computer technology as an aid to stowing the containers so their weight was distributed evenly. This is vitally important as incorrectly loaded ships can turn turtle and sink.
Container ships sailing under the OCL banner were characterised by their green hulls with white topping, white superstructure and green funnels bearing the initials OCL in white letters. All OCL ships' names ended in Bay, such as Encounter Bay, Tokyo Bay, Liverpool Bay, Resolution Bay and Mairangi Bay.
Renamed NOL RISSO in 1996 and P&ampO NEDLLOYD LIVERPOOL in 1998
Sold for scrapping, arriving at Panyu on 14th October 1998
