Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Oct 26, 2009 7:51 pm

Portugal and Monaco issued in 1996 both two stamps for the Centenary of the Oceanographic Campaign

Built as an iron hulled yacht under yard no 20 by Ramage & Furguson, Leith, Scotland for Lord Otho Fitzgerald.
21 June 1880 launched as FAIR GERALDINE.
Tonnage 188 gross, 128 net, dim. 148 x 21.1 x 11.1ft. (draught).
Powered by a 2-cylinder inverted compound steam engine, manufactured by Walker Henderson & Co., Glasgow, Scotland, 55hp.
Rigged as a three masted topsail schooner.
1880 Completed.

She was later renamed in GIRALDINE.
Her engine was upgraded till a 4-cyl 66 nhp steam engine, manufactured by Walker Hederson & Co.
1897 She was owned by King Carlos I of Portugal and renamed in AMÉLIA (II). (his portrait is also showed on the stamp of Portugal)
When he sold her I could not find but one year later he got the AMÉLIA (III).

1901 Was she sailing under the name ONORA can not find an owner.

Just before World War I was she sold to the Turkish Customs Service and renamed VAZIFE or VAZIFEH (what I think means custom) but she dropt from the records shortly thereafter, most probably a war casualty.

Monaco 1996 4.50f sg2264, scott1993.
Portugal 1996 95e sg2486, scott2084.
