TIPNOL OF ALLUK (outrigger canoe)

Post by aukepalmhof » Tue Oct 27, 2009 8:26 pm

For thousands of years the mean transport was by outrigger canoe in the Marshall Islands, on which the life of the Marshal Islanders relied.

One of the outriggers was the TIPNOL, she was made from the trunk of the native breadfruit tree, and by using adzes and chisels made of shell and bone, the early Marshallese constructed this mid-size canoe.
With a length of between 18 to 30 feet, she could carry up to 10 persons.
The wooden pieces were tied together with coconut fiber lashing, for caulking she used the sap of the breadfruit tree. Passengers and goods were carried on a transverse platform.
The mast stays were fastened to two independent main booms.
The sail with a triangular form was made of the strongest pandanus leaves, and secure sewn together by the women.
The TIPNOL mainly used for fishing in the lagoons, but also used for short sea voyages.
The TIPNOL is very fast, speeds up to 12 knots have been recorded.
