SALTILLO yacht

Built as a yacht under yard No 1101 by the shipyard of G de Vries Lentsch, Amsterdam for Mr. D. Lawrie from the U.K.
Under which name launched till so far not found.
Tonnage ? dim. 26.25 x 5.25 x 2.88m. (draught).
Now powered by a Volvo Penta diesel engine, 150hp.
Ketch rigged, sail area 200 m².
1932 Completed. She was designed by the naval architect E.P.Hart.

After about one year the yacht was on the market, and she was bought by Mr. D. Pedro Galindez, from Spain.
He moved the vessel to the British yard of Campers & Nicholson for a refit, and finishing the interiors of the yacht.
She was renamed SALTILLO named after one of the residences of the owner in Portugalete. SALTILLO = English translation Forecastle.
30 June 1935 the President of the Republic Alcalá Zamora gives the yacht her certificate of registry for unrestricted sailing in all the waters of the world.
1935 She was the only Spanish yacht present in the British Silver Jubilee Fleet Review of King George V at Spithead.
1936 She was damaged during the Spanish Civil War by a bomb, was repaired after the war, and took thereafter part as a particular yacht in many regattas.
1946 The yacht was given by Mr. Galindez to Don Juan de Borbón, Count of Barcelona.
1948 Accompanying participation in the first Olympic Games after the war in London.

Thereafter used for match racing and regattas as member of the Real Sporting Club.
17 March 1958 she crossed the North Atlantic to New York, 24 June she arrived at Cascais, Portugal.
14 May 1962 she was witness of the wedding at Athens, Greece of Juan Carlos de Bourbon and Dona Sofia of Greece, the later king and Queen of Spain.
1963 Made a voyage to the United Kingdom.

1968 D. Pedro Galindez donated the yacht to the Officially School of Nautical Science at Portugalete, where after she was used as a sail training vessel.

From 1987 till 1988 is she in shipyard hands for overhaul and continuation restoration till 1998.

She is now used by students of the High Tech School of Nautical Science and Marine Engineering in Balboa.
2002 Took part in the Cutty Sark Tall ships Race.

2007 Still in service.
