Mr. Michael Goaman, the designer responsible for the set of South Georgia stamps, informs me that the whale catchers shown on the 4d. and 9d. stamps are two of a fleet of vessels with code letters R2 and R3, and his designs are intended to represent the fleet generally. According to Lloyd's Register these whalers are owned by the Calpe Shipping Company and registered at Gibraltar; the R2 on the 9d. stamp was built by Jonker and Stans, at Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht, Holland, the R3 being built by Ijsselwerf, at Rotterdam. Both were completed in 1957.The catchers measure 183 ft. 9 in. x 30 ft. 7 in. x 13 ft. 2 in. and are fitted with M.A.N. oil engines and reversible pitch propellers. Machinery is situated aft and the vessels have a gross tonnage of 518. The catwalk on these whale-catchers seems to be rather an unusual feature and certainly gives them quite a modern appearance.
