ROSCOE whaler

Post by aukepalmhof » Sun Nov 22, 2009 7:44 pm

She carried the American flag and depict on the stamp as a barque.
Two vessels under American flag, with homeport New Bedford carried the name ROSCOE one ship rigged, the other as a barque, both whaling from New Bedford.

The problem is that the ship rigged vessel was re-rigged as a barque in 1855.

Can not find any indication which vessel made a call at Tristan da Cunha, or a painting of drawing on the net of the ROSCOE.

ROSCOE (1) the ship rigged vessel sailed for her first whaling voyage from New Bedford in October 1821 under command of Capt. Swain to the Pacific whaling grounds.
Not a tonnage of owner given.
After 16 whaling voyages she was crushed in the ice of the Arctic on 10 August1872.
At that time was she under command of Capt. Edward D. Lewis, and owned by Loum Snow & Co., New Bedford. Tonnage 313 ton.

The barque rigged ROSCOE (2) sailed for her first whaling voyage in 1833 from New Bedford under command of George H. Richmond, tonnage 235 tons, not an owner given.
After nine whaling voyages she was withdrawn from whaling and sold in 1859.
She was under command of Capt. Nathan M. Mendell and owned by J Bourne, jr. when she arrived on 4 May 1859 in New Bedford on her last whaling voyage.
Fate unknown,

Both vessels have been in the South Atlantic so a positive identification is not possible till we have found a drawing or painting of the ROSCOE.
