ARICA BAP (SS-36) submarine

In 2005 Peru issued two stamps which depicts submarines owned by that country.

Built as a coastal attack submarine one of the class 209 type1100 under yard No 54 by the Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft AG at Kiel for the Peruvian Navy.
24 June 1970 ordered.
01 November 1971 keel laid down.
05 April 1974 launched as the BAP ARICA (SS 36), named after a naval battle at Arica on 07 June 1880.

Displacement 1.185 tons surfaced, 1.290 tons submerged. Dim. 56.1 x 6.2 x 5.5m.
Powered by four MTU type 12V493 AZ80 GA31L diesel engines, 5.000 shp, one shaft, speed 21 knots submerged.
Range by a speed of 4 knots surfaced 11.300mile.
Armament 8 – 21 inch torpedo tubes (carried 14 Whitehead A 184 wire-guided torpedoes.)
Diving depth 250 meters.
Crew 35.
21 January 1975 commissioned.

After sea trials in the North Sea she arrived in 1975 at Callao , Peru her homeport.
Between 1983 and 1984 overhauled at Kiel by her builder.
2005 Is given she is in reserve.
2009 She arrived in the USA for exercises with the US Navy.
2009 In service.
