TARAWA was stricken from the naval registry on April 30, 2024. The newspaper Stars and Stripes reported that the ship would be used in a sinking exercise as part of Exercise RIMPAC 2024.
On 19 July 2024, TARAWA was sunk off the coast of Hawaii during RIMPAC 2024 by a US Navy Super Hornet, a B-2 Spirit and HMAS Sydney. TARAWA is the largest ship to be sunk during a live fire naval exercise since USS BELLEAU WOOD in 2006.
