Luis Vaez de Torres was the captain of the second in a three-ship Spanish expedition led by Pedro Fernandez de Quiros in 1605.
On 26 June 1606 Torres sailed from Espiritu Santo through the Solomon Islands, landing at Pagula in the Louisiade Archipipelaqo of Milne Bay Province on 24 July. He spent six weeks in this region mostly at anchor at Siedeia Island.
Documentary evidence of his journey is scarce; however, he worked his way up the Papuan Coast, stopping at Mailu, Port Moresby and Redscar Bay, through the strait to the Arafura Sea.
