In September 1973 ELIZABETH RIPPON, under coxswain Michael Berry, went to the assistance of the French yacht BACCHUS in very rough seas.
The badly damaged yacht was anchored near Green Island, its crew of six clinging to the cabin roof.
A hundred yards from the yacht the lifeboat grounded four times on a rock before being lifted clear by a large swell, finally coming alongside and rescuing the crew.

A Silver Medal and the Maud Smiths Bequest was awarded for the bravest act of lifesaving to Coxswain Michael Berry, the thanks of the R.N.L.I. on Vellum was awarded to the remainder of the lifeboat crew.
