BRITISH STEEL yacht

Post by aukepalmhof » Mon Jan 04, 2010 8:30 pm

Built as a yacht by George Phillip & Son, Noss, on the River Dart for D.W. Russel & A.L. Blake. U.K.
19 August 1970 launched as the BRITISH STEEL.
Tonnage 18.2 ton, dim. 50.9 x 13.1 x 8.1ft. (draught).
Ketch rigged. Sail area 1,500 square feet.
One auxiliary Perkin diesel engine, 40 bhp.
She was designed by the naval architect Robert Clark.
Building cost £20,000.

After she was completed used by Chay Blyth for circumnavigation westward around the world, and the voyage was sponsored by the British Steel Corporation.
18 October 1970 Blyth left Southampton road for his single handed nonstop voyage westward around the world, passing 24 December Cape Horn, and returned 02 August 1971 Southampton which he reached after a passage of 292 days.

In 1972 took she part in the Observer Single Handed Trans Atlantic Race under skipper Brian Cooks, she arrived as fourth after a passage of 24 days, 19 hour, 28 minutes.

She later was used by the British Army, but I could not find anything on her during this time.

2009 She is under restoration at Dartmouth and owned by Pete Goss, but his company is in financial trouble, so it can be that she has now an other owner.
