CANTERBURY HMNZS
Laid down at Yarrow Ltd. 12 April 1969. launched 6 May 1970. Completed 22 October 1971. Displacement 2.860 tons full load Length 372ft. Beam 43ft. Draught 18ft. Armament Two 4.5in guns. Two 0.5in machine guns. One quadruple seacat guided Missile launcher. Two triple barrelled torpedo tubes. One Wasp helicopter carrying homing torpedoes.
Machinery Two babcock and Wilcox boilers.
Two sets direct reduction geared turbines. Two shafts. 30.000shp. Speed 30 knots. Crewed by 250 officers and men.
Launched by Her Royal Highness Princess Anne on 6 May 1970 and was commissioned into the Royal New Zealand Navy on 22 October 1971.
CANTERBURY is the first vessel of its class to be fitted with two sets of triple barrelled anti-submarine torpedo tubes in place of the more familiar mortar system on other Leander Class Frigates.
The ship is designed to steam and fight in conditions of nuclear fallout.
