ALASKA USS (SSBN-732) nuclear submarine

Built as a Ballistic Missile Submarine by Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corp., Groton, Connecticut for the USA Navy.
09 March 1983 laid down.
12 January 1985 launched under the name USS ALASKA (SSBN-732) one of the Ohio class of 18, all built by the same yard and launched between April 1979 and July 1996. She was christened by Mrs Catherine Ann Stevens, the wife of Senator Ted Stevens from Alaska. She was the 4th ship in the United States Navy named for the 49th state.
Displacement: surface approx. 16.765 tons, submerged approx. 18.750 tons. Dim. 170.69 x 12.8 x 11.5m (draught).
Powered by one General Electric nuclear S8G reactor, two geared turbines, 60.000 shp, one shaft, speed 20+ knots.
Armament 24 tubes for Trident I and II ballistic missiles, 4 – 21 inch torpedo tubes.
Crew 13 officers and 140 men. (two crews)
Diving depth 1000 ft.
25 January 1986 commissioned, at the Naval Underwater System Centre, New London, with Captain Paul L. Callahan in command of the Blue Crew and Capt. Charles J. Chotvacs in command of the Gold Crew.

September 1986 she sailed via the Panama Canal to Bangor, Washington her home base, where she arrived in October 1986.
Early 1987 she made her first Strategic Deterrent Patrol.
Since joining Submarine Squadron 17 the USS ALASKA has conducted over 35 Deterrent Patrols.

2006 Sailed from Bangor to Norfolk for an engineering refuelling overhaul, after completing she joined the Atlantic Fleet with home base Kings Bay, Georgia.

2007 Still in service.
